Translating "跗陽", acupuncture point BL-59
The reasoning for translating "跗陽" as "Calyx Yang" from Chinese into English. This is the original name of acupuncture point BL-59 (Bladder 59).
Explanation of the point name
跗 is usually taken to mean 'instep,' so the upper middle part of the foot. However, this point is not located there, but on the outside of the lower leg, 3 Cun above the ankle bone. The WHO has 'tarsus' for 跗, which is the back half of the foot. Still, not where the point is located, but closer.
The CJKV-English Dictionary also has 'petal, or calyx of a flower,' the calyx being the bud from which a flower grows. The shape of that is quite similar to that of the heel with the Achilles tendon at the back of the foot. This makes more sense than 'instep' or 'tarsus.'
The point is on the outer, yang side of the lower leg.
